Achieving health equity
Health care providers often feel overwhelmed when trying to address the larger social conditions which make their patients sick or interfere with their healing. Dr. Camara Jones of UC Berkeley will present her Cliff Analogy illustrating three dimensions of health intervention: health services, addressing social determinants of health (including poverty), and addressing social determinants of equity (including racism). Defining racism as a system of structuring opportunity and assigning value based on the social interpretation of how one looks (which is what we call “race”), she will equip us with allegories on “race” and racism to illuminate topics which are otherwise difficult for many Americans to understand or discuss.
