Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social and communication impairments and restricted interest in repetitive behaviors, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. New research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 68 children in the United States have autism.
