SCORE Program expanding to the Eastern Shore

Children’s National Safe Concussion Outcome Recovery & Education (SCORE) Program has expanded services to the Eastern Shore in Salisbury, MD to treat children and adolescents experiencing symptoms of a concussion or traumatic brain injuries (TBI).  Under the direction of Gerard Gioia, PhD, The SCORE program has become a nationally recognized, comprehensive concussion management program, which has provided individualized expert care for over a decade.

At this new Salisbury location, trusted concussion experts in the program will provide kids and adolescents between the ages of 5 to 22, with the following services:

• Evaluation and management of injury and its effects.
• Development of an active treatment plan for daily rehabilitative activities that promote recovery.
• Tracking progress toward recovery.
• Individual case consultation with primary care or referring physicians, school, and sports personnel.
• Counseling patients and families on return-to-risk activities.
• Return-to-play medical clearance.
• Referrals to local rehabilitation programs for additional therapies when needed.
• Education and training of coaches, parents, and kids on recognition and response of suspected concussions.

Patients who need ongoing concussion management receive follow-up care within the SCORE Program in partnership with their primary care physicians.

Referral Guidelines

If you are considering whether you should refer your patient with a suspected concussion or TBI to the SCORE program, please consult the following referral criteria. Patients with:

• Known or suspected concussion due to any cause or mechanism (e.g., motor vehicle collision, falls, assault, sport or recreation, objects striking patient, etc.), requiring diagnosis or active management to facilitate recovery
• Complex injury (e.g., multiple blows within a short time-frame, concussion with possible rotational or neck injury, significant injury with high severity of signs and symptoms)
• Persistent symptom patterns (greater than two weeks) without significant improvement
• No change in neurocognitive functioning (e.g., ongoing deficits in test performance or continued significant deficits in attention, learning, memory, or processing speed) after one to two weeks
• Presence of risk factors (medical, neurological, psychiatric, learning, or attention disorders) possibly contributing to prolonged recovery
• Persistent cognitive dysfunction or school problems
• Need for more intensive school program recommendations
• Presence of significant emotional factors possibly interfering with recovery
• A concerning history of multiple concussions
• Patients requiring confirmation or clearance for return to risk activities
