Behavioral Parent Training is one of the few empirically validated interventions for childhood ADHD, making it a critical element to most treatment plans developed for children with ADHD. Clinic staff work with parents, within the context of a supportive environment, to develop effective strategies that can be implemented on a consistent basis.
Thorough intake sessions are conducted. Pre-treatment assessments are administered following the intake appointment, in order to guide treatment and track treatment progress. Parents’ presenting concerns generally range from mild to severe, and frequently include the following: noncompliance with rules or routines, aggressive behavior, tantrums, disrespectful language, disruptive behavior and destructive behavior. Sessions are conducted in individual and/or group formats. School consultation is provided, as necessary. Externs participate in all aspects of the interventions described above, under close supervision provided by Lisa Efron, Ph.D. Caseload is determined based on externs’ level of training and previous experience.
Optional externship opportunities include conducting individual therapy with children and teens who have been diagnosed with ADHD; this additional experience is ideal for externs who wish to gain expertise in both child-focused, as well as parent-focused, interventions. In addition to formal, face-to-face supervision, externs also have the opportunity to attend the Psychology Division’s externship seminar series and weekly behavioral health grand rounds.
