Message from Dr. Barber

Dear Prospective CNH Resident,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s National Hospital. We have the privilege of serving the children and families of Washington, D.C., the surrounding region, and the world who, in turn, teach us so much about medicine and life.

We envision a world where the well-being of children, the world’s most precious resource, is at the forefront and transformed by pediatricians who leverage their unique perspectives and collective skills for the benefit of children.  The mission of Children’s National’s Pediatric Residency Program is to serve children by providing world-class education and innovative training experiences to pediatric residents in an environment that values each individual, encourages collaboration and promotes wellness, in order to achieve our vision of improving the well-being of children through clinical care, education, advocacy and research.  As you take this first look at our program, I hope that our values are apparent.

When asked what makes this place my choice for where to work and train, my response is four-fold:

1. The people! It is the greatest privilege to serve this community in the nation’s capital with over 100 talented residents, our committed program leadership team and 7000 employees of Children’s National. 
2. Our training experiences! We aim to set you up optimally for your next steps through an immersive training experience where you are key members of the team and have the opportunity to lead care. We are intentional about designing our adjunctive experiences.
3. We don’t want you to “fit in”. The multitude of perspectives, backgrounds, lived experiences and areas of expertise that we all bring to the table make this place unique. We will all benefit from you simply bringing your best self to the table. We aim to promote diversity and ensure inclusion and equity through intentional policies, procedures and scholarship.
4. We strive to promote wellness. Physician well-being and patient outcomes are interconnected in a complex way, so we recognize that physician wellness is important to the vision of improving child health. As data emerges regarding physician wellness, we aim to evolve as well. 

Since the 1920s, this residency program has served children through the education of their pediatricians, including many leaders of the field. We are honored to educate the next generation of pediatricians and leaders in child health.
