Scholarship

Over the course of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship, the fellow is expected to formulate a research question relevant to pediatric hospital medicine, design and implement a research study and analyze the results. The fellow is expected to present the findings at a regional or national meeting and submit them for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Research fundamentals will be taught at the monthly fellows’ conference. More advanced information and skills are attained through completion of graduate coursework.

Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to complete a quality improvement project during their fellowship training through longitudinal quality improvement educational curriculum that is composed of live workshops and online modules.

Fellows benefit from strong research infrastructure at Children’s National Hospital, through the Center for Clinical and Translational Research, Sheikh Zayed Institute for Surgical Innovation, the Bear Institute, Children’s Research Institute and Child Health Advocacy Institute. In addition, we are geographically adjacent to the National Institutes of Health and will soon be opening our new Innovation Campus. Members of our division enjoy collaboration as investigators with all of these centers/institutes, providing our fellows with a variety of research opportunities, as well as guidance and mentorship.

Each fellow will conduct their primary fellowship scholarly project with a Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) in place to aid them in their journey from inquiry to publication. We are fortunate to have a variety of backgrounds represented on our standing SOC committee, including:
