Caring for Owen’s Heart, Close to Home
Owen was 2 weeks old when his parents learned he would need a life-saving cardiac catheterization procedure. “It was like the earth stopped spinning,” says his mom, Brooke. Care providers in our Heart Institute offered guidance and support before, during and after the successful procedure that corrected Owen’s heart defect.
“The doctors have always connected with us on a personal level,” says Owen’s dad, Paul. “In those scary moments, like when you find out your baby needs surgery, that’s what you need.”
Owen’s team initially cautioned that he might be small for his age and have developmental delays. “He has been quite the opposite,” says Brooke. At 7, he almost outweighs his 10-year-old brother and excels in school. He loves animals and riding his dirt bike. He’s also very focused on giving back. He and his family have raised thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association.
Cardiologist Dr. Laura Olivieri has cared for Owen at our Frederick, MD location for the last seven years. “Dr. Olivieri is a very important scientist and doctor but is never too busy to help us,” Paul says. “The echocardiogram tech and the front desk staff have been the same for all of these years. Seeing their familiar faces is always a comfort.”
“We live out in the mountains,” Brooke says. “We are so lucky that Owen can have this kind of care so close to home.”
