Caring for Demonte's Health and his Future

Delmonte with Dajasha

When Demonte graduated from high school, nurse practitioner Dr. Nadine Camp said to his mother Christena, “We did it!”

“She is like a sister to me and a second mom to my children,” Christena says. “It’s a wonderful feeling to have someone like her in our corner.”

Dr. Camp has cared for Demonte at Children's National Hospital’s Anacostia location since his birth in 1999. In addition to providing wellness care, she once guided Christena through a very rough time when Demonte was burned accidentally as a little boy. She helped Christena stay calm and informed throughout Demonte’s emergency care and surgery at our hospital.

Dr. Camp helped a teenage Demonte navigate his learning disability and get mental health treatment when he was diagnosed with ADHD and depression. “I used to get calls from the school all the time and I didn’t know what to do,” Christena says. She and Dr. Camp discussed treatments, medications and coping strategies to help Demonte function better in school and still live life like a regular kid.

“She and my son — they have a bond that can’t be broken,” Christena says. “They hug each other and laugh and reminisce when they see each other. She gives him advice about everything. I love her for that. It’s just the person she is.”
