Carsten's Story

Overcoming challenges. Giving back to help other children with cancer.

Challenges are an everyday part of Carsten’s life. But he learned from an early age that challenges are a springboard for great opportunity.

One of Carsten’s first challenges was receiving a leukemia diagnosis at age 6. Chemotherapy treatment worked, but resulted in a serious side effect: liver damage from iron overload. Several hospital stays, liver biopsies, and ongoing medication have addressed the condition.

These early challenges seemed to have made Carsten willing to take on more, such as earning a black belt in Tae Kwan Do or greatly exceeding his fifth-grade challenge to read 40 books during the school year.

He’s also challenged himself and others to give back. Carsten designed a board game with Mattel with facts about cancer to help patients learn and heal. And he challenged himself to raise $1,500 for crucial medical equipment for a surgeon working in the nation of Cameroon.

Whether at school, playing sports, or serving as an ambassador for his hospital, Carsten is a reminder that challenges can create unexpected and life-changing rewards.
