Macie's Story

When Macie was born, her skin turned blue. Her heart wasn’t pumping enough oxygen to her body. Macie’s parents learned that their baby might not live, and if she did, she would likely suffer brain damage. Little Macie needed open-heart surgery. But that would only be the beginning of a long journey and a battle against the odds …

Friends like you made sure she had every chance to thrive.

Macie had her first open-heart surgery when she was just 7 days old, and another 11 weeks later. When she was 8 months old, she needed a third surgery and specialized care.

She and her family travelled up the East Coast so internationally recognized pediatric surgeon Dr. Richard Jonas could operate on her.

That’s how Macie came to be a patient at Children’s National. When Dr. Jonas joined our team, Macie came with him. She still comes to our hospital for ongoing check-ups and care.

“Dr. Jonas saved Macie’s life,” Macie’s mom, Dana says. “I consider it a miracle that she has remained so stable since then.”

When you give to Children’s National, you give children in our community and beyond access to advanced treatment and expert care, with specialists like Dr. Jonas and his team.

You help make sure children can survive … and thrive.

Like Macie. She’s currently a senior at Clemson University. She’s studying recreational therapy with the goal of working with children and young adults who have special needs. In the meantime, she volunteers with the ClemsonLIFE program, which helps students with intellectual abilities.

Macie says, “I have a heart for children with different challenges. My medical condition and the care I’ve received changed my life. I’m so excited to continue pursuing my passions and spend my life giving back.”

Here’s another happy update. Macie has again been named to Clemson University’s President’s List! She truly beat the odds. Now, her future is bright, thanks in part to you.

See the lasting impact you make when you give to help kids thrive? Thank you for powering the care that changes lives like hers, and for making another amazing story of strength possible. Macie is stronger today because of you!
