When Justice was critically sick, his mom knew Children’s National was the best place for him. But she never expected to spend the holidays in the hospital. See how you gave them happy holidays …
“No one wants to spend the holidays in the hospital with a sick child,” Justice’s mom, Melissa, said. She worried about keeping Justice’s spirits up. And she worried about her other children. During a time of so much stress for their family, her children deserved to have happy holidays.
Thanks to your support, they did!
Justice delighted in seeing our therapy dogs in costume for Halloween.
Then, at Thanksgiving, our team helped Justice’s family give thanks in a big way.
“We took over the family room on the 4th floor,” Melissa says. Justice and his parents, siblings, grandparents and cousins enjoyed take-out turkey, mashed potatoes and all the fixings.
“It was a wonderful meal,” Melissa says. And it meant the world to her to see Justice enjoy it. “That Thanksgiving was the first time Justice started to eat again after his surgeries.”
Justice’s family also enjoyed a festive Christmas, complete with a visit from Santa and his elves. Since Melissa was spending all her time at Justice’s bedside, she wasn’t able to shop for presents. But thanks to you, we could set up a holiday shop where moms like Melissa picked out gifts for their children.
“Without that holiday shop, we would have had no gifts for our kids that year,” Melissa says.
Most of all, Melissa says, Justice and his family got to experience the warmth and compassion that make the holidays special. She says, “Everyone made us feel at home — like family.”
Thank you for giving children and their families a reason to believe this holiday season. You make the holidays bright, and help children grow up stronger.
