Coby's Story

When 6-week-old Coby spiked a dangerously high fever, his mom Tamara knew there wasn’t a moment to lose. She leapt into action. See what happened next, and how YOU power the nation’s top-rated newborn care for babies like him.

Tamara rushed Coby to their local hospital, but his condition only worsened. When EMTs from Children’s National Hospital arrived, Tamara knew her baby was in the best possible hands. The EMTs invited her to ride to the hospital with them in the front seat of the ambulance. Along the way, they offered her reassurance about Coby’s condition.

When they reached the emergency department, a team of experts converged to offer support. Coby was rushed into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where he was ultimately treated for viral meningitis.

“Children’s National gave him the care he — and our family — needed,” Tamara says. “A doctor offered to set me up to pump so Coby could have breast milk. Nurses swaddled Coby and advocated for him, asking for pain medicine when necessary.”

She adds, “Compassion at Children’s National came in other forms, too. Our family is Jewish and we observe the Sabbath. The hospital’s fully stocked kosher pantry gave us a dedicated place to eat. We often went there to regroup.”

Today, Coby is a healthy, happy baby who loves to laugh and smile. He has fully recovered.

“As a mom, I’m grateful for a lot of things, like having a healthy family,” Tamara says. “Time spent in the NICU at Children’s National made me realize how fortunate we are to have country's best newborn care in our region.”

It’s all thanks to you. Your continued generosity helps us deliver the best possible care to children. Thank you for giving families a Reason to Believe this holiday season.
