Blackbaud Security Incident

The Children’s National Hospital Foundation holds our friends and donors in the highest regard and takes the protection of your information very seriously.

That’s why I wanted to inform you that Blackbaud, a long-time vendor, notified Children’s National that it was the target of a data security incident. Blackbaud is one of the world’s largest providers of data hosting services for nonprofits in healthcare and the education industry.

Children’s National was one of thousands of organizations impacted by this cyber-attack, which occurred between February and May. The attack may have affected certain Children’s National Hospital Foundation data that Blackbaud hosts, including donor names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and philanthropic giving history.

It is important to note that the Foundation does not store any credit card information, bank account details or Social Security numbers in this database, so this information was not compromised. Blackbaud stated there is no reason to believe any data involved was or will be misused, or will be disseminated or otherwise made public. Blackbaud hired a third-party team of experts to continue indefinite monitoring for any such activity.

We do not believe there is a need for you to take any action at this time. As a best practice, we recommend that you remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or suspected identity theft to the proper authorities.

Blackbaud has taken steps to prevent future attacks and created a website with the latest information:  https://www.blackbaud.com/securityincident.

We deeply value your partnership. On behalf of the entire team at Children’s National, please know we are grateful for your continued support and for all you do to help children grow up stronger.

Sincerely,

DeAnn Marshall, MHA
President
