Honor World Hearing Day for Children

At Children’s National Hospital, children with auditory and language disorders receive exceptional care at our Hearing and Speech Center to help them thrive. 

 

In recognition of World Hearing Day 2023 today, we celebrate the inspiring journeys of many of our auditory patients. Meet a few of them here.

 

Morgan

 

Morgan was born deaf. She received cochlear implants and world-class care from an auditory specialist and speech-language pathologist at Children’s National.

 

Today, she continues to make great progress with her hearing and speech. When her dads tell her, “I love you,” she hears and feels it.

Christopher

 

Christopher partially lost hearing after a cancer surgery when he was nearly 2. He received care at Children’s National for his complex condition. Today, at age 18, he is proudly cancer free and uses external hearing aids for auditory support. Christopher thrives as a student at the Maryland School for the Deaf.

 

“I just love being able to see him grow and progress,” says Christopher’s sister, Sasha. “His communication skills have improved so much.”

Owen

 

Newborn Owen arrived at Children’s National severely ill, with a virus that can cause hearing loss in infants. Throughout his recovery, he visited our audiology, ophthalmology, neurology, occupational and physical therapy departments. Owen is now 4 and hears clearly.

 

His mom, Lisa, says their care team’s investment in Owen’s small successes encouraged them to keep going.
