Sheikh Zayed Institute Awards $250K for Innovative Pediatric Medical Devices
The Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National hosted its fifth annual Pediatric Device Innovation Symposium on Sept. 25, a day-long event that culminated in the awarding of $250,000 to six companies for innovative medical device solutions that address significant unmet needs in pediatric health. The annual symposium reinforces the importance of philanthropy in providing much-needed funding to bridge the gap between concept and development.
Among the transformative projects awarded prizes at the “Make Your Medical Device Pitch for Kids!” competition were a novel device for correcting spinal deformity and a low-cost, single-use cleaning technology that could prevent a common hospital-acquired infection.
The Pediatric Device Innovation Symposium was developed to ignite innovation in the pediatric medical device field.
“To improve care for children, it is imperative that we recognize and encourage relevant new solutions in pediatric medical devices, especially in light of the challenges innovators face in addressing this specialized market,” said Kurt Newman, MD, president and CEO of Children's National. “Children’s National is committed to fostering collaboration among innovators, clinicians, policy makers, and investors to advance pediatric device development for the benefit of children everywhere.”
The Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation was founded through a $150 million gift from the Government of Abu Dhabi with a mission of making surgery more precise, less invasive, and pain-free.
