Guardian Society Luncheon Spotlights Innovative Therapies in Genetics and Cancer

Attendees at the ninth annual Guardian Society luncheon on April 19 were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at research and innovations at Children’s National that are improving children’s lives.

Held at the Mayflower Hotel the event featured presentations by two distinguished researchers who are improving treatments and seeking cures for deadly childhood diseases. Dr. Rohan Fernandes discussed his research in nanoparticles and explained how they can be used in diagnostics and therapy—including some promising work using them to target and destroy cancer cells. Dr. Juan Cerrolaza explained how he is developing new diagnostic imaging tools and demonstrated the cell phone app he helped create to screen for genetic disorders.

Dr. Kurt Newman, president and CEO of Children’s National, said these and other researchers at Children’s National are taking a very different approach to pediatrics. “This level of innovation is leading a culture change throughout our health system,” he said. “We want to do more, do it better, and do it faster. All to help children.”

The Guardian Society recognizes the thoughtful individuals who have included the Children’s Hospital Foundation in their wills or other legacy gifts. Their generosity provides vital resources to provide hope and healing to future generations of sick and injured children and their families.
