KARL STORZ Advances Training for Minimally Invasive Surgery

On Oct. 21, Children’s National held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the hospital's first-of-its-kind pediatric center, the KARL STORZ Center of Excellence – Minimally Invasive Surgical Training Center. Since its beginnings in 1945, the KARL STORZ family company has grown into a global manufacturer and distributor of endoscopes, medical instruments, and devices. Attending the dedication ceremony were several representatives from KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc.

“Caring for children requires unique and dedicated solutions," said Ali Amiri, Vice President of Marketing and Product Development for KARL STORZ. "We are proud to support Children’s National in their endeavor to innovate and educate in the pediatric surgical space across various sub-specialties, and we are proud to recognize them as a KARL STORZ Center of Excellence." The center, which completed its inaugural training session earlier this year, is part of the hospital's Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. The space is equipped with state-of-the-art surgical towers and instruments, reflecting the latest tools and techniques for minimally invasive pediatric surgery. Led by Tim Kane, MD, chief of the Division of General and Thoracic Surgery, and  Dr. Nancy Bauman, an otolaryngologist, a minimum of four courses will be taught on an annual basis to fellows, interns, residents, and attending physicians.

Dr. Kurt Newman, president and CEO of Children's National, said, “The first-ever partnership between KARL STORZ and a pediatric hospital is enhancing our Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. This partnership supports our focus on building expertise and sharing knowledge to tackle our bold mission of making surgery more precise, less invasive, and pain-free. We are grateful to share in this celebration with KARL STORZ.”
