Support of Complex Care Specialists Helps Keep Twins Together at Home

"Children’s National is more than a hospital and a collection of doctors,” according to David Hilton, whose family was profiled by John Kelly as part of the Washington Post's campaign to raise money to cover the cost of medical bills. David and his wife Sonia have twin boys, Matthew and Joshua, and Joshua is treated through the complex care program. Karen Fratantoni is medical director of the program, which treats children who have multiple medical needs that require careful coordination. “The biggest commonality is some sort of need for technology,” she said, noting that may patients require a tube to be fed or have a tracheotomy to allow them to breathe. The program helps children live -- and in many cases thrive -- outside the hospital environment. Read "When One Twin Takes a Turn for the Worse, Bethesda Family Turns to Children's National."
