Marriott's Spirit to Serve

Marriott International is one of the largest hotel chains in the world, so you may have stayed in a Marriott hotel at some point in your life. Chances are that same Marriott had a variety of activities ongoing to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, whether donating a portion of item sales, hosting a golf tournament, or serving a special buffet breakfast, all to raise money for a local children’s hospital.

Marriott is CMN’s oldest – and one of its largest – fundraising partners. Since the beginning of the partnership in 1983, Marriott has raised more than $100 million for children’s hospitals nationwide. In 2015, the more than 130 Marriott locations in the greater Washington area – including their 17 brands and corporate headquarters – raised $302,895 for Children’s National. Over the course of the partnership, Marriott has raised more than $3.8 million for Children’s National.

There are many ways that Marriott and its employees support Children’s National, largely determined by property managers. Property managers can donate a portion of PepsiCo products, such as Aquafina or Lipton Teas, during the summer months. They can also hold special buffet breakfasts, where a portion of the breakfast price is donated. In each case, a sticker or icon is placed near the register or on the menu so customers know that by purchasing those items, they are supporting local children and families. Employees also get creative with their fundraising techniques. Some collect spare change from Marriott associates, participate in jeans days, plan bake sales, and support events that raise money year-round. The Marriott Washington Business Council event hosts a golf tournament to raise funds for Children’s National.

One of the largest fundraising events is organized by one of Marriott’s newest properties -- the Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor. On Sunday, June 26, the Gaylord will host the third annual Taste of National Harbor, a food and wine tasting event featuring samples from award-winning harbor restaurants and producers. Tickets are $35, and all proceeds benefit Children’s National. Last year the event raised more than $45,000, making the Gaylord Marriott’s top fundraising property in the region.

Marriott also gives back to patients and families through in-kind donations. Marriott invites and encourages its customers to donate their Marriott Rewards Points to CMN Hospitals. Donated points allow the families of sick children to stay at a Marriott hotel while their children are treated at a nearby children's hospital.
