Dr. Bear's Closet

Children’s National accepts brand new toys, books, clothing, and gift cards for our Dr. Bear’s Closet. These donations are given to patients and family members during their hospital visit to provide comfort, offer distractions and to normalize the hospital setting. These toys also allow us to stock our playrooms and provide gifts for birthdays and holidays.

Please review our current wish list and guidelines below:

Wish List and Guidelines

Immediate Needs (All items need to be brand new and in-season; please do not gift wrap)

  • UNO cards and playing cards
  • Infant and toddler toys (rattles, teethers, stacking toys, toys that light up or make noise/music, etc.)
  • Activities for adolescents (13+) – games, craft kits, coloring books, journals, sketch pads
  • Action figures and Barbies for preschool and school-age children
  • Books for all ages
  • Bubbles
  • Coloring books and art/craft kits for all ages (preschool through adolescent)
  • Coloring supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils, gel pens)
  • Dolls (of all skin tones)
  • Fisher Price Little People®
  • Headphones/earbuds for kids and teens
  • Kid-friendly DVDs and Xbox/Playstation games
  • Lego sets/kits for all ages
  • LOL Surprise Dolls
  • Nurture Smart crib mobiles
  • Security blankets and swaddling blankets
  • Sensory toys
  • Toy cars/trucks
  • Travel size toiletries: soap, body wash, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and laundry detergent
  • Clothing: child and adult clothing, underwear and socks (all sizes)
  • Gift cards: American Express/Visa, Amazon, Target, Walmart, gas and grocery
  • Online donations: You can also donate toys and games directly to Dr. Bear’s Closet through our online Amazon Wish List!

Ongoing Needs (All items need to be brand new and in-season)

  • Blankets (for all ages, including swaddle blankets)
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • Board games (Candyland, Sorry, Trouble, Monopoly, Connect 4, Chutes and Ladders, Life, Jenga, Guess Who)
  • Books for all ages in Spanish
  • iPads, iPad minis, tablets and handheld video games
  • Infant activity gyms and centers
  • Journals
  • Musical instrument toys
  • Plastic dolls
  • Puzzles for all ages (up to 300 pieces)
  • Seasonal decorations for playrooms
  • Sound machines
  • Stickers
  • Stuffed animals
  • Coffee supplies for family waiting rooms: 10-oz. coffee cups, individual creamer, sugar and sweetener packets, stirrers

Items that We Cannot Accept

  • Beanie Babies
  • Breakable items, such as porcelain, glass, handmade wooden toys or collectible items
  • Food/candy/formula
  • Get-well cards (cards must be void of religious, political and violent content and should avoid terms like get well or feel better — instead use terms like “Sending you Smiles” or “You Rock!”)
  • Items that are gift-wrapped (all items need to be checked for appropriateness before giving to a patient)
  • Items that have been exposed to smoke or other strong scents
  • Items with sensitive issues (e.g. violence, politics, holidays, religion, death, divorce, weapons, etc.)
  • Latex balloons or anything containing latex
  • Medical equipment
  • Stuffed toys more than 18 inches tall
  • Used toys and stuffed animals
  • Used books

Drop off Times

Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m, (the office is closed from noon-1:00 p.m.)
Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Unfortunately, we do not have the staff available to pick up donations off-site. When you arrive, please pull into our drop-off zone in our parking garage – you are safe to leave your car parked and locked in this area while you bring your items to the Volunteer Services office on the first floor. For confidentiality and infection control purposes, donors are not able to deliver gifts directly to patients.
