Coronavirus Update:What patients and families need to know

Health Priority:

Children with Asthma

A disproportionately high number of DC children suffer from asthma. IMPACT DC is an award-winning pediatric asthma program focused on improving asthma care, awareness, and outcomes.

The program aims to steer families away from the emergency room for asthma care, and instead teach them to effectively manage their child’s condition long-term and ultimately lead healthier lives.

The IMPACT DC clinic typically sees children within two weeks of an ED visit or hospitalization. Taking advantage of the “teachable moment” that naturally occurs after an asthma attack, clinicians talk to the patient and family about:

  • Asthma severity and control
  • The basic anatomy and physiology of asthma
  • Controller medications, if prescribed
  • Use of inhaler devices, as indicated
  • Self-monitoring by symptoms and/or measurement
  • An individualized Asthma Action Plan
  • The role of the environment and triggers in asthma
  • The importance of long-term asthma care with a primary care provider

Education for Healthcare Providers

Primary care providers have an important role in caring for children with asthma. IMPACT DC partners with pediatric clinics and offices to coach staff in the best practices for asthma care. These include:

  • Providing high quality asthma education to families
  • The importance of developing an Asthma Action Plan
  • Use of national guidelines to improve the health and quality of life for kids with asthma

Outreach to Schools and Day Care Centers

For children in school or daycare, asthma can have a tremendous impact on their attendance, participation, and ability to learn. To better identify and manage asthma in these settings, we work closely with:

  • School nurses
  • Teachers
  • Parents
  • Other caregivers

Community Events

Because education is such a powerful tool for managing asthma, IMPACT DC participates in community events throughout the year:

  • Children’s National Race for Every Child
  • Bringing It All Together Health Fair
  • HSCSN Health Fair
  • Latin American Youth Center Health Fair
  • Girls on the Run 5K
  • World Asthma Day
  • Various health fairs
  • School-based programs
