The Children's Research Institute
Office of Innovation and Technology Commercialization
The Office of Innovation and Technology Commercialization (OITC) at Children’s National Health System manages all aspects of intellectual property development, creates strategic business partnerships with external stakeholders, and provides educational information to foster academic entrepreneurship. OITC manages the protection, marketing and commercialization of all hospital intellectual property and non-patentable intellectual property such as research tools, software and know–how.
Our mission is to provide Children’s National staff with the support, resources and guidance necessary to move ideas and discoveries from the research setting to the marketplace that benefit the health and well-being of children regionally, nationally and internationally.
Translational research has been a cornerstone strategy for Children’s National. In 1989, leadership codified this by forming a separate affiliate, the Children's Research Institute (CRI). Today with more than 130 faculty, CRI advances state-of-the-art biomedical research – bridging discovery to clinical practice. In 2009, a generous gift of $150 million was given to Children’s National to establish the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation to make surgery more precise, less invasive, and as painless as possible. Together, these Institutes will define innovation in pediatric care in the 21st century. In 2015, the Office of Innovation and Technology Commercialization was established to catalyze these efforts. OITC offers guidance and resources to enable Children’s National employees to navigate a clear path to the development of innovative pediatric products.
