Residents as Teachers
Training physicians who can share their skills with other learners is an important part of our education at Children’s National. There are many opportunities for learning these skills that residents are presented with throughout residency:
- PL2 Residents as Teachers Day: This is a day dedicated to learning how to teach. The day begins with Objective Structured Teaching Evaluations (OSTEs), in which residents interact with standardized “learners” (posing as patients or medical students) that serves as a baseline for the residents teaching skills and knowledge. The day will be punctuated with self-directed learning and questions (referred to as the flipped classroom) followed by workshops on the material. We’ll be discussing Orienting a Learner, Giving Feedback, and Teaching a Skill. The OSTE will be repeated at the end of the day to assess skill improvements and effectiveness of our teaching.
- Senior Residents As Teachers (SRAT): While on acute care as senior residents, the PL3s will participate in Hospitalist-run lunch sessions focusing on teaching skills relevant to inpatient care: orienting the team, developing autonomy on rounds, teaching in a busy clinical session, evidence-based medicine, and rotation debriefing.
- Presentations: Residents are asked to teach fellow residents multiple times during residency. Senior residents are in charge of teaching interns while on Night Float. They are also in charge of running a mock code and leading their interns through an evidence-based-learning lecture while on acute care teams. PL3s will each lead two Morning Reports throughout the year. PL2s will lead a noon conference focused on the ABP board specifications for topics of their choice.
- Supervisory Role in Continuity Clinic: In many continuity clinics, senior residents help supervise interns during their clinical duties and are responsible for leading discussions on a variety of primary care topics.
