Tell me about a time when you...

...had an interview and how you handled the challenging questions you were asked.
Because next thing you know, Autumn is here and you have residency interviews very soon. Hopefully a whole bunch of residency interviews. Maybe you will be asked to name the branches of the aortic arch
, but a more reasonable and more likely approach is that you will experience a behavior based interview
But how and why does this work?
The behavior based interview rests on the notion (or, the well studied premise) that past behavior is predictive of future behavior.
So let me
(your interviewer) ask you
(the applicant) about how you have handled something in the past, so I can have an adequate glimpse into how you will handle it in the future. Lots of "tell me about a time" questions. And some where we say, "give me an example of..."
Tell me about a time you lacked information but had to make an important decision.
*Tell me about a time you had to build a relationship with someone you didn't like.*
Describe some of the challenges you have encountered over the past year and how you handled them.
*Give me an example of something you've posted online using social media that you then regretted.
*** These types of questions and more appear in this article using the STAR method, the Situation or Task, the Action you took, and the Results you achieved.**I made this one up. And no I won't be linking to anything here.
And for an even trendier technique, you may experience the Multiple Mini Interview
approach; see this post, it's like speeding dating but instead it's your interview
