Psychology Service for Diabetes
When your child is diagnosed with diabetes, specialists at Children’s National Medical Center ensure that all aspects of care are covered in treatment — we provide the medical care to help patients stay well, and the support to help children and families thrive.
The Psychology Service for Diabetes team sees every child newly diagnosed with diabetes and works with individual families to assist with medical and behavioral management of the illness.
How We Can Help
Children’s comprehensive diabetes care includes counseling that enables patients and families to adjust to changes in lifestyle and manage new, sometimes complex medical needs associated with diabetes.
The psychology team provides psychoeducation, support, and counseling for families and patients diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We provide services in both inpatient and outpatient settings and coordinate psychological care with medical, nursing, nutrition, and social work staff.
The psychology services staff:
• Meets with families as part of comprehensive diabetes education at the time of diagnosis
• Consults with family members during outpatient follow-up visits
• Provides ongoing psychotherapy services to patients and families
Clinical services also include support groups for teens with type 1 diabetes and family education nights for newly diagnosed children and their families. Speak with a member of the team for more information.
Diabetes Research at Children’s National
Our team members are active in a number of ongoing research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health exploring a variety of psychosocial issues, including:
• Diabetes management in preadolescents
• The impact of type 1 diabetes on parenting
• Adjustment and management in young children with type 1 diabetes
To learn about current clinical trials and how your child may participate in a study, speak with a member of your child’s care team or one of our specialists.
