When your child has a neurological disorder, finding a pediatric specialist is an important part of getting the care he or she needs. At Children's National, more than 30 pediatric neurologists — part of the largest pediatric neuroscience team in the country — offer their vast experience to patients and families. The neurologists are in the divisions of neurology, neurophysiology and epilepsy, neurocritical care, neuro-oncology, and the Gilbert Institute for neurofibromatosis.
The neurology division’s team includes neurologists, specially trained nurse practitioners, dedicated neurology nurses, and social workers. To offer a multidisciplinary, fully integrated approach to care, the division consults on the best treatment for your child in collaboration with physicians from the more than 40 pediatric specialties — individualized treatment for your child.
Our team cares for common and complex pediatric neurological conditions, including:
Inpatient and Outpatient Services
The division sees about 2,500 patients each year through our Inpatient Consult Program. Inpatient neurologic care addresses a variety of conditions that require hospitalization, including trauma, tumors, epilepsy, and inflammation (such as meningitis).
Outpatient care covers neurologic evaluations, assessments, and related treatments. You can access neurologic outpatient care at Children’s National Medical Center, and Children’s facilities in Rockville, Frederick, Laurel, and Annapolis, Maryland, and in Virginia, Fairfax and Woodbridge.
Children’s National also serves patients and families throughout the region by coordinating inpatient and outpatient clinical neurologic care for several area hospitals, including INOVA Fairfax Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital.
Research and Clinical Trials
Most of the division’s staff are engaged in clinical and translational research, which makes the most advanced care accessible to our patients and families.
Often in cooperation with researchers from various institutes, including the National Institutes of Health, our neurology team members are actively engaged in research to discover the underlying mechanisms of neurological conditions and identify best practices in care.
Areas of current research include:
• Brain cancers (neuro-oncology)
• Hereditary muscle diseases (muscular dystrophy)
• Seizure disorders (epilepsy)
• Nervous system disorders, including neurofibromatosis type 1
