Physical Therapy

Physical therapy focuses on the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and cardiopulmonary systems of the human body, as these systems relate to human motion and function. Physical therapists, or PTs, are very important members of the healthcare team. They treat children who have problems with functional mobility.

Physical therapists at Children’s treat special patients, who are not just little adults. Treatment goals in pediatric physical therapy focuses on helping children develop or enhance functional, behavioral, and developmental abilities that will maximize their success in school and at play.

Physical therapy is a highly specialized field. Today’s physical therapists are required to have a doctorate in physical therapy in order to begin to treat patients. In addition to this rigorous clinical and academic preparation, the practice of PT is regulated in every state and further requires that all therapists pass a national certification examination.

Physical therapists provide comprehensive training for patients that includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Functional mobility
  • Balance and gait retraining
  • Soft-tissue mobilization
  • Body mechanics education
  • Casting and splinting
  • Wheelchair safety and management
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Exercise programming
  • Family education and training
  • Assistance with pain relief and management
  • Instruction in safe ambulation
