Our specialists support all divisions at Children’s National Health System, helping to diagnose and understand the nature of complex diseases and disorders. The division’s pediatric clinical, anatomic, and neuropathologists evaluate thousands of new cases each year.We employ a range of diagnostic methods and advanced laboratory techniques to help our colleagues analyze and identify various cardiac, gastrointestinal, muscular, neurological, and renal conditions, among other system disorders, as well as complications related to organ transplants. The division evaluates biopsies, including all tumors, surgical resections, such as tissue samples, cytology specimens (loose cells), blood and other bodily fluids, and is available to perform post-mortem assessments. We offer comprehensive laboratory services and anatomic pathology methodologies, which include:

  • Cytochemistry - to evaluate macromolecules responsible for cell structure and function
  • Electron microscopy - commonly used to identify and diagnose kidney disease and immotile cilia syndrome
  • Immunofluorescence - a fluorescence dye is used to see subcellular distribution of antibodies or antigens (foreign substance)
  • Immunohistochemistry - to detect the presence, abundance, and localization of specific proteins; commonly used to identify and diagnose certain cancers
  • Muscle histochemistry - to study diseased muscle tissues
