Safe Kids DC

Unintentional injuries are the #1 cause of death and disability for children under the age of 19 in the United States. Safe Kids District of Columbia is committed to helping children and families prevent injuries through educational programs and outreach activities which include:

Safe Kids DC is one of over 400 coalitions across the country that make up Safe Kids Worldwide. Founded in 1988 at Children's National, Safe Kids Worldwide's global mission is to reduce childhood injuries from cars, sports, drownings, falls, poisonings, and more. One way Safe Kids DC fulfills this common goal is through education about fire and burn prevention. That's why at Children's National, Safe Kids DC is part of the division of Trauma and Burn Surgery.

Safe Kids D.C. and its community partners operate several car seat inspection and installation stations throughout the city to teach fa.m.ilies how to safely transport children. All inspection stations are operated by nationally certified child passenger safety technicians (CPSTs) and instructors (CPST-Is). This service is provided free of charge to fa.m.ilies and the community at large.

During a car seat inspection or installation, we will:

  • Weigh and measure the child
  • Provide hands-on instruction to the parent/caregiver regarding proper installation
  • Check for recalls
  • Check the expiration date
  • Check for broken or missing car seat parts
  • Provide education to avoid heatstroke-related injuries

For more safety tips and information on selecting the right car seat for your child, check out the Safe Kids Ultimate Car Seat Guide.

We offer car seat inspections, no appointment required, at locations across the city.

Other Programs

Bike and Pedestrian Safety

Young kids are at risk of injury when they run into the street without looking or fail to look both ways when crossing the street. Our bike and pedestrian safety programs are designed to teach children and parents traffic safety do’s and don’ts. Through interactive scenarios, children learn about traffic signals, when to walk/bike, the importance of wearing reflective clothing, the dangers of distracted walking/biking, as well as other safe pedestrian behaviors.

Sports Safety

We know sports are great for children, but too many are stuck on the sidelines because of an injury. Most sports injuries can be prevented with smart habits and good training for players, coaches and parents.

Through sports safety clinics we educate children, parents and coaches about the dangers of the most common types of sports-related injuries that occur in youth sports:

  • Preventing overuse injuries
  • Concussion awareness
  • Proper hydration
  • Emergency response

Home Safety/Falls

Our home safety programs inform parents and caregivers about the simple things they can do to create an environment where kids can be active, healthy and safe at home.  Home safety programming includes:

  • Button battery safety
  • Falls safety
  • Fire safety
  • Laundry safety
  • Medication safety
  • TV and furniture safety

    How You Can Get Involved

Our efforts are largely volunteer supported.  We are always looking for parents, child health advocates and local organizations to raise awareness about childhood injury prevention and broaden our reach.

Safe Kids District of Columbia welcomes new ideas and members. Join us in helping children in the District grow up stronger by collaborating on injury prevention activities, networking with other child safety advocates, and volunteering at community events.  In lieu of participation, monetary donations are also welcome to help sustain our coalition so we can continue supporting injury prevention in the District of Columbia.
