Physician-Researcher Receives NIH Grant for Improving Patient-Provider Communications

Tessie October, MD, MPH, a critical care physician and researcher at Children’s National Health System and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The George Washington University, received a perfectly scored K23 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study “Enhancing Parent-Provider Communication During Critical Illness.”

Five Winning Pediatric Device Innovators Receive Seed Funds to Develop Medical Devices for Children

Five pediatric medical device innovators were awarded $50,000 each in seed funding at the second annual National Capital Consortium for Pediatric Device Innovation (NCC-PDI) Competition held last week. The FDA funded consortium, led by the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National Health System and the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, awarded $250,000 in grant money to companies with promising pediatric medical devices that address a significant unmet pediatric need.

First Lady Michelle Obama, Former First Ladies Lend Support to First-Ever Healing Garden at Children’s National Health System

First Lady Michelle Obama and all five living former First Ladies today announced their support for a project to transform a gravel rooftop space at Children’s National Health System into a 7,200-square-foot healing garden. Currently in development, the garden will give patients and their families a healthy outdoor space where they can enjoy art, music, and inspiring views of Washington, DC. The garden will be dedicated to the First Ladies of the United States, and Mrs. Michelle Obama, Mrs. Laura Bush, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mrs. Barbara Bush, Mrs. Nancy Reagan, and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter are serving as honorary chairs of the garden.
