Awards and Recognition

Our multidisciplinary team of the world’s finest pediatric clinicians and research scientists come to work with one goal in mind: to improve the lives of children.

We have remained focused on the health of children since our founding in 1870. For more than 140 years, Children’s National has developed a national and international reputation for pioneering new therapies and treatments across a wide array of medical specialties.

Home to Children’s Research Institute and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, Children’s National is consistently ranked among the best pediatric hospitals in America by U.S.News & World ReportWe’re also recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Magnet® designated hospital, the highest level of recognition for nursing excellence that a medical center can achieve.

We lead the way in children’s health. Our physicians and nurses and other staff are often asked to present at national conferences, submit publications in national and international outlets, chair various committees, and participate in many programs. Some examples of our national leadership include:

  • We’re verified as a Level I Trauma Center-Pediatric by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons, which recognizes our team’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured children throughout the greater Baltimore and Washington, DC, region.
  • Our Intensive Care Units critical care nurses and clinical teams earned a Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses for exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall satisfaction. Our Pediatric ICU and Cardiac ICU received a gold-level three-year designation and the Neonatal ICU, recognized at the silver-level, has a two-year designation.
  • The Children’s Research Institute is among the most funded National Institutes of Health pediatric institutions in the country.
  • We’re the home of the federally funded Emergency Medical Services for Children National Resource Center, which was established to improve the pediatric emergency care infrastructure in the United States.
  • Children’s National Heart Institute is one of the leading cardiology groups involved in the initial project of the Joint Council on Congenital Heart Disease, a multi-institutional National Quality Improvement Collaborative. It aimed at improving the care and outcomes for children with cardiovascular disease.
  • In July 2010, we were awarded the prestigious Clinical and Translational Science Award grant, from the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Science, to establish the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, a partnership between us and The George Washington University.
  • Children’s National is among an elite group of hospitals worldwide to achieve Magnet designation, a nationally recognized accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). While only six percent of hospitals nationwide receive this recognition, even fewer children’s hospitals are recognized, adding Children’s National to a list of national leaders when it comes to excellence in nursing, patient care, and innovations in professional nursing practice.
