For Physicians

Children’s National Medical Center ’s International Program connects pediatricians and other physicians around the world to one of the premiere pediatric hospitals in the United States. We are committed to the provision of world-class care for all children, whether through our International Referral Program or Telemedicine services for consultations, second opinions or distance learning opportunities

Referring a Patient
Children’s International Programs accept referral cases from physicians or through embassies in Washington, DC. To refer a patient, fill out the referral form providing as much information as possible. A representative from the International Program will contact you within 24 hours to discuss your patient, appointments, logistical options and estimated costs. Once arrangements are made, we can contact the American Embassy in your country to help facilitate the issuing of travel visas for the patient and his/her family.

Physician Exchange Program
Sometimes patients are too critical for international travel. Children’s International Program can send pediatric medical teams to international referring institutions to perform procedures, assess patients and deliver lectures for continuing education.

Additionally, Children’s National can arrange for physicians and other medical and non-medical staff from around the world to come to Washington, DC, for training. Prices for this service are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Please contact the International Program for more information.

Telemedicine connects Children’s National Medical Center ’s world-renowned physicians to medical teams at sites across the globe. Whether it is to provide medical consultations, second opinions or offer continuing educational opportunities, telemedicine assists physicians to help them provide the best possible care for their patients.

Children’s physicians are available for telemedicine consultation through live videoconferencing and asynchronous transfer or discussion of patient information. Consultations may be scheduled per patient, service line or globally through a multi-specialty agreement.

Second Opinion Consultation

Children’s physicians can provide second opinion consultations to confirm diagnoses and/or review a current treatment plan.

Physicians in the operating roomEducation and Training
Children’s offers didactic lectures on a variety of topic areas, interdisciplinary team case discussions and customized education in a focused clinical and/or surgical area. A full range of distance learning options are available.

Technical Design Consultation
Children’s Telemedicine Program, in conjunction with the International Program, can travel to your institution to complete a full assessment of the technical infrastructure and clinical and/or distance learning needs. Children’s National will then develop a technical planning document to assist with the purchase and installation of the appropriate hardware and software needed for videoconferencing applications.
