Surgery Fellowship

Overview

The Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery offers: pediatric surgical residency training in an ACGME accredited program.

Since 1964, the Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery has offered residency training in a two year ACGME approved program.  There are two residents in any given year; a first year pediatric surgical resident and chief pediatric surgical resident (2nd year in the program).  After program completion, individuals are eligible to sit for the American Board of Surgery Specialty examination in Pediatric Surgery. Training includes- neonatal surgery, oncology, minimally invasive surgery, non-cardiac thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, trauma & emergency surgery, endocrine surgery, robotic surgery, head & neck surgery, and bariatric surgery.  Our mission is to train surgeons in the practice of pediatric surgery who will be competent in every aspect of the pediatric surgical care of infants and children.  The graduates will provide high quality surgical care to children as well as serve as future leaders and mentors in responsible practice, in education, in research and in advocacy.

Responsibilities for providing excellence in all aspects of pediatric surgical care patient are encompassed in the following areas: timely and compassionate patient care; maintenance of strong and effective working relationships; continuing medical education and scholarly activity for individual learning; clear communication on all matters that are of importance within the training program and hospital practice; participation in divisional education and governance activities.

52 fellows have successfully graduated from this program.  The Division performs 3,000 procedures per year utilizing some of the most advanced techniques and equipment in the nation.  There are 17 operating rooms in the main hospital with the majority being recently renovated and outfitted with advanced minimally invasive surgical and imaging capability.  There are 2 same-day surgical centers in the surrounding DC area where pediatric surgeons perform outpatient procedures.  The Division has 8x board certified pediatric surgeons many of whom are national and international authorities in their areas of interest.
