What We Do
About Us

Children’s National Health System’s specialists are experts in caring for kids, and it’s all we do.

With locations in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia, we take a team approach to caring for children in their communities. The team includes our leadership and a wide range of facilities and specialists, from pediatricians to pediatric subspecialists, ensuring that our patients’ care is integrated among all team members.

We conduct promising research with a focused goal of anticipating diseases to improve the overall health of children, enabling them to grow up and lead healthy lives.

Our location in the nation’s capital affords us a unique position to serve as an advocate for children, which we do on both the national and local levels as ambassadors for children.

We strive to:

  • Set the standard of excellence in care of children
  • Serve as the voice for the most vulnerable among us
  • Lead the quest to cure childhood’s most devastating diseases
  • Prepare the nation’s future leaders in child health

Our patients and their families contributed to the creation of Children’s National’s Health System’s child-centered vision, which looks at the hospital experience through a child’s eyes and articulates our commitment to providing the best care to children:

  • My hospital is a bright and happy place that feels like home
  • My providers, my family, and I are a team, and everyone's job is important
  • The way my hospital works is built around me
  • My providers don't all look alike
  • My hospital is my family's connection to everything I need for my health, whether they provide it or blaze trail it

Stats and Data

A Rich History of Growth and Innovation

We have grown from a modest 12-bed facility in 1871, to the integrated healthcare system we are today.

Stats and Data

Team members are among the most experienced pediatric primary and specialty care providers, and our advocacy and health promotion programs further our intention to give all children the best chance for a bright future.

More than 1,500 nurses, 800 physicians, and hundreds of allied team members provide care for infants, children and adolescents, averaging more than 400,000 outpatient visits each year at health clinics in the District, affiliated centers in Maryland and Virginia, and at the Sheikh Zayed Campus.

Children’s National is the regional referral center for cancer, cardiac and critical care, fetal medicine, neonatology, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, pediatric emergency medicine and trauma. Children’s Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center is the region’s Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, the highest rating possible, and serves the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia.

Additionally, Children’s National is the largest non-government provider of primary care in the District of Columbia. We deliver care at community centers and mobile health services, which is one way we help make quality care more accessible to children and families.

Beyond our borders, state-of-the-art telemedicine capabilities enable Children’s specialists to bring their knowledge and expertise to children all around the world—patients as far away as Africa have access to our experts.

To address the most challenging problems in children’s health, the Children’s Research Institute and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation facilitate collaboration between clinical divisions and researchers. Their discoveries enhance our vision to transform healthcare for children worldwide.

Children’s National also is a teaching hospital, training the next generation of pediatric healthcare professionals. Children’s Research Institute oversees our educational activities and academic affairs and the Department of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

In July 2010, Children’s National was awarded the prestigious Clinical and Translational Science Award grant, from the National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Science, to establish the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Children’s National, a partnership of Children’s National Health System and the George Washington University. This is the first, and to date only, such grant awarded directly to a freestanding children’s hospital.
