Genetic Medicine Research Education
Education and training are a key part of the mission of the Center for Genetic Medicine Research. At any point in time, the Department hosts dozens of post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and short-term training fellowships. Most faculty hold joint appointments in The Department of Integrative Systems Biology (ISB), a basic science department within the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Prospective PhD candidates are encouraged to apply to our GW ISB program, and/or to the Systems Biology concentration within the Molecular Medicine track. There are also many other opportunities for arranging education and training within the Department. Some of these include:
- NIH K12 Genetics and Genomics of Lung Disease. This training grant is to transition senior fellows and post-docs into faculty positions, providing protected time and mentorship. Please contact Mary Rose, PhD, for information.
- NIH T32 Genetics and Genomics of Muscle Disease. This training grant is for post-doctoral fellows, both physician/scientists and basic scientists, in muscle research. Please contact Terence Partridge, PhD, or Eric Hoffman, PhD, for information.
- NIH Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Center. The Wellstone Center includes training slots for PhD and post-doc fellows interested in muscular dystrophy research. Contact Eric Hoffman, PhD.
- NIH National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research. This Center hosts on-site training of fellows and students in genome or proteome-enabled rehabilitation research, murine drug trials, and pediatric clinical trial outcome research. Contact Susan Knoblach, PhD.
Additional training positions are available using both NIH and institutional funding sources. In addition, the department hosts several ongoing weekly lecture series as well as a number of workshops focusing on genomic/proteomic and pathway analysis throughout the year.
