Burgess Clinic

Children’s National Health System established the Burgess Clinic in 1989 to promote a supportive environment and meet the unique medical needs of adolescents infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS — a place where we can offer young patients both help and hope.

Comprehensive Care for HIV/AIDS Patients

Despite medical treatment that can now prevent mother-to-child transmission, the number of children born in the District of Columbia with HIV remains alarmingly high. As well, the District of Columbia has the highest prevalence of new AIDS cases in the United States for African-American adults and adolescents.

The Burgess Clinic at Children’s National Medical Center, one of the largest programs in the United States, treats more than 90 percent of the Washington, DC area’s HIV-infected adolescents ages 13 – 21 years of age. The clinic services are integrated with extensive acute and chronic care for HIV/AIDS patients coordinated through the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine and related divisions at Children’s National.

Children’s health care team helps patients and families manage the special issues faced by young people infected with HIV. The clinic’s multidisciplinary team treats the whole person, providing comprehensive care to address the physical and psychological needs of patients.

Members of the Burgess Clinic care team include:
