Being Me Health Curriculum

Being Me is a science-based health curriculum developed by a collaboration of scientists and educators for kids in grades 3-5. Our goal is to get kids excited about science. We ask questions like:

  • Have you ever had the chance to blow up a pig lung or look at the sections of a sheep’s brain? 
  • Were you ever allowed to play with mucus or blow bubbles at school? 
  • Ever wondered how much sugar is in a soda or how much salt is in French fries? 
  • The creators of Being Me want kids to play with this stuff, and think kids may learn a little bit about science, math, health, and medicine in the process. 

Today, the Being Me curriculum is being evaluated in three area schools; one in Prince George’s County and two in the District of Columbia. The science teachers and students who are testing the materials and lessons in school have the opportunity to participate in family learning events and a special invitation-only science camp called Dr. Bear’s Cubs Summer Science Experience. Participating teachers attend Dr. Bear’s Summer Training Institute. In the future, the Being Me curriculum will be available to all science educators and families for use in the classroom or at home.

About the curriculum

The curriculum includes art-based, hands-on learning for students, parents and teachers. As an extension of the curriculum, this website provides resources for science educators and families interested in learning more about the science of health for elementary-aged kids.

Being Me covers five core health topics:

  1. Asthma 
  2. Sleep 
  3. Obesity
  4. Sickle Cell Disease 
  5. Bullying/Injury Prevention

Being Me is a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The grant is given to organizations aiming to advance knowledge of medical science and clinical research among the general public, including children.

The development of the curriculum was a collaborative effort that included Children’s National Medical Center, the George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development, and the National Children’s Museum.

The Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI) provided formative evaluation for the project.  Summative evaluation will be done by New Knowledge Organization (NKO).
