Taking Action Around the World - Dominican Republic

Recently, several members of Children’s National Ophthalmology team traveled to the Dominican Republic to provide medical and surgical eye care to underprivileged children and adults. Part of Casa De Luz, the team from Children’s National performed 86 surgeries throughout the week.

The first trip was conducted in 2006 and a team from Children’s National has been making the annual trip ever since. During this year’s trip, the team treated children from Haiti who suffered injuries during January’s earthquake.

“We’re fortunate that we live in an area with access to specialty medical services,” said pediatric ophthalmologist Kelly Hutcheson, MD, who helped to organize the trip. “This annual trip to the Dominican Republic provides much-needed medical care to patients who otherwise wouldn’t receive it.”

The team saw many eye problems and performed surgery for strabismus, cataracts and pterygia.

In addition to Dr. Hutcheson, Marlet Bazemore, MD, and Jonathan Taylormoore, MD, made the trip to the Dominican Republic. Members of Children’s National’s ophthalmology team are the organizers and principles of Case De Luz.
