Pre-Operative Care Clinic - Referral Guidelines

Patients with complex medical issues, special needs, and
other circumstances should be referred to POCC to ensure appropriate considerations are taken prior to surgery. Pediatricians or a parent can contact the team at 202-476-POCC (202-476-7622).

Patients with the following conditions should be evaluated through the clinic:
  • Complex heart Disease
  • Serious respiratory disease, such as severe asthma or cystic fibrosis, or patients requiring a ventilator or oxygen at home
  • Pierre Robin or Goldenhaar syndrome, or patients who have had difficulty with placement of a breathing tube in the past
  • Muscular dystrophy or progressive weakness of another cause
  • Poorly controlled diabetes, diabetes insipidus, or a metabolic disorder
  • Dialysis – renal or peritoneal
  • Liver disease
  • Seizures that are difficult to control
  • A history of serious complications of anesthesia
  • Sickle cell disease, hemophilia, or other blood disorders
  • Special ethical issues, such as religious objection to blood usage
  • A history of major complications with anesthesia
  • Any patient whose family or physician feels they would benefit
Prior to surgery the H & P Form must be completed and sent to the child’s surgeon.
