Obesity Institute - Public Policy and Advocacy

Taking a public health approach to the childhood obesity epidemic promises to yield better results than one that focuses solely on personal responsibility. Therefore, the Institute will seek to take a leadership role in the local community through public health research that yields policies designed to prevent overweight and obesity among our children.

As suggested by the Institute of Medicine, “What is needed is for the childhood obesity epidemic to reach a ‘tipping point,’ where small collective changes within and across all sectors will produce a substantial effect so that the obesity epidemic will be acknowledged, environmental changes will take hold, communities will be mobilized, and individuals and families will aspire to pursue healthy behaviors and active lifestyle as the norm.” The Institute will bring all of its intellectual resources to bear on this crisis to assist the District of Columbia in its mission to slow, stop and reduce the incidence of childhood obesity.

Today at Children’s National

The Obesity Institute focuses especially on issues affecting children in our community:

  • Children’s National recently commissioned a Pediatric Health Needs Assessment for Washington, DC from the RAND Corporation—the first of its kind. The data from this study is being used to inform decisions about health policy and community benefit resources for the Obesity Institute as well as to establish a foundation for planning and implementing obesity-related programs and interventions.
  • Obesity Institute staff served on the working group of stakeholders that examined each component of the District of Columbia’s Healthy Schools Act.  We are also providing oral and written testimony in support of this legislation.
