Correctly identifying a food allergy can be difficult. So, it’s important that your child sees pediatric specialists with particular expertise in food allergy. Symptoms of food allergy can range from hives and trouble breathing to vomiting and problems gaining weight. If not treated properly, some forms of food allergy can be life threatening.

After hearing about your child’s symptoms, our food allergy specialists determine which tests would be most appropriate. Our testing services include:

  • Skin testing (specialists monitor skin reactions to an allergen)
  • Serum IgE testing (a blood test that shows how a child’s immune system reacts to an allergen)
  • Oral food challenges (doctors monitor how the child reacts after being exposed to an allergen or food)

The Food Allergy Program also helps families learn how to live with and manage a child’s food allergy. We educate patients and their families on ways to avoid food allergens, how to recognize signs of a reaction, and what to do in an emergency.

The Food Allergy Program has educational brochures on common food allergies in children. Click on one of the links below for more information:

Families also learn from the program how to deal with practical issues, such as attending school, eating out and traveling with a food allergy. For more information, click on one of the links below:
