About Our Program: Our Relationships

Children’s National around the world

The opening of Abu Dhabi Office in 2007
The International Program at Children's National now have two offices to assist families overseas - one in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the other in Kuwait City, Kuwait. Children’s National Medical Center and Washington Hospital Center recently opened a medical office in the United Arab Emirates in the city of Abu Dhabi. The new office serves as a liaison office for Children’s National Medical Center and Washington Hospital Center in the Gulf Region. The office coordinates conferences and continuing medical education courses for medical staff and facilitates second opinion services via the internet and telemedicine, bringing the expertise offered at the two Washington, DC-based hospitals to the citizens of the UAE and other Gulf countries. For more information please contact our International Program office.

Children's National Medical Center advances research and education to improve child health and well being through innovative, translational research. Research at Children's is conducted through Children's Research Institute (CRI) and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation.

Our annual NIH grant portfolio has grown from $6 million in 1998 to more than $33 million in 2006, and the total grant portfolio has increased from $12 million to $60 million in that same period. In 2007, the grant portfolio grew to $75 million. The research at Children’s has become a focal point for multi-institutional projects in the metropolitan Washington, DC, area and nationally.

There are extensive interactions between CRI research and clinical programs at Children’s, facilitated by the high number of physician/scientists, and the physical proximity of research space and patient care units. This multidisciplinary approach to research has led to substantial strength in translational medicine, including the ability to apply for state of the art genomic and proteomic approaches to patient diagnosis and monitoring. It has also been the catalyst in developing treatments, preventions and cures for some of the most devastating pediatric disease.

State of the art telemedicine technology allows doctors in Washington DC to share information with more than 100 partnership sites in 14 countries including Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar. Children’s National and Zayed Giving opened a specialized Children’s National pediatric mobile health clinic on May 26, 2008 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The mobile clinic, stationed next to the Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi, provides medical treatment, educational programs, and screening services for children and their families. Through its partnership with Zayed Giving, Children’s National will provide dedicated pediatric pediatricians to the UAE for the duration of one year for this health campaign.
