Research Interests
Candice Alfano, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and director of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Program (CAAP) at Children's National Medical Center. She also serves as assistant professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Medicine and Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Alfano received a Master’s degree in Developmental Psychology from Florida International University and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Maryland at College Park. After completing her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, she joined the faculty at Children's National. The primary focus of Dr. Alfano’s research has been on the etiology, development, and treatment of anxiety and phobic disorders in youth, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. She has published numerous empirical papers and book chapters on anxiety disorders across the life-span, serves as a peer-reviewer for several journals and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Anxiety Disorders. Her current research program focuses on the role of sleep in the development and trajectory of childhood anxiety, including examination of the prevalence, severity and daytime sequelae of sleep disturbance in children with GAD. Dr. Alfano also has won numerous awards for her research, including awards from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and the American Psychological Association. In 2008, she was the recipient of a New Investigator Award co-sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the American Society for Clinical Psychopharmacology.
