Research Interests
Robert J. Freishtat, MD, MPH, is an assistant professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Children's National Medical Center and the Department of Pediatrics in the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. After receiving a BS in Pre-Medicine from The Pennsylvania State University in 1993, he moved to the University of Maryland in Baltimore where he was awarded his MD in 1997. After pediatric house-staff training at the University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, he returned to the mid-Atlantic region to Children's National Medical Center where he trained in Pediatric Emergency Medicine between 2000 and 2003. Concurrently, he completed an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. In 2003, he joined the Children's National Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty where he serves as a part-time clinician when he is not in his laboratory directing an active research program exploring gene-environment interactions in asthma. Additionally, he spearheaded the formation of a novel research curriculum for the Children's National Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship and currently serves as its director of Fellowship Research. In this role he has the opportunity to mentor fellows, residents, medical students, and undergraduates through their research experiences.

Dr. Freishtat is a member of the national research committee for the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and an active member of the American Thoracic Society and the American Federation for Medical Research. He is a recipient of a career development research award (K23) from the NIH National Center for Research Resources. In addition, he twice received the Henry Christian National Award for Excellence in Research from the American Federation for Medical Research in 2004 and 2005. Dr. Freishtat has authored over 22 articles and book chapters in the fields of asthma, sepsis, and emergency medicine.
