Research Interests
Steven Zeichner, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric HIV disease and the molecular pathogenesis of viral infections. Dr. Zeichner came to Children’s National Medical Cetner from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Zeichner received his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago and his MD and PhD in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Chicago and its Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Zeichner completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Zeichner has been the principal investigator on several clinical trials investigating new antiretroviral agents in children and studies of the complications of pediatric HIV disease. In his basic laboratory work, Dr. Zeichner studies the basic biology of HIV and Kaposi’s Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV). His HIV work has recently focused on understanding the cellular systems that help control HIV latency and on the effects that HIV replication and individual HIV genes have on HIV’s host cells. In his KSHV work, Dr. Zeichner has studied the control of KSHV gene expression and developed a KSHV microarray that has enabled his laboratory to determine in great detail the gene expression program of the virus. Dr. Zeichner has published more than 50 articles. He co-edited the Handbook of Pediatric HIV Care, which is also being published in a very low cost edition for distribution in resource-poor regions of the world, and the Textbook of Pediatric HIV Care, which won a prestigious “Highly Commended Award” from the British Medical Association, and is being translated into Russian.
