Research Interests
African-Americans represent approximately 65 percent of all children with HIV-1 infection or AIDS in the United States. During the pre-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era, more than 40 percent of African-American children experienced an increased number of renal complications leading to poor growth and the progression of HIV-infection. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of these patients developed a renal syndrome named HIV-1 associated nephropathy (HIVAN). Today, the early institution of HAART lead to the reduction of viral burden, and has prolonged the life of HIV-infected children. However, with better treatments and medical care leading to a significant improvement in survival rates, the prevalence of adolescent children with AIDS and/or HIVAN in HIV-infected patients may increase whenever these patients become resistant or non compliant with HAART. Thus, it is necessary to define potential renal urinary biomarkers that can be use to follow the progression of childhood HIVAN on a regular and non-invasive manner. My research focuses on two specific areas: identification of biomarkers of renal disease progression in HIV-I infected children and the elucidation of the mechanisms involved in the renal disease progression using HIV-Tg rats as a surrogate model of HIVAN.
