Research Interests
Dr. Leitenberg joined the faculty and staff at Children’s National Medical Center in 2001. He came from Yale University where he completed residency and fellowship training in Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He earned an undergraduate degree in Zoology at the University of Vermont and his MD and PhD degrees at the University of Iowa. Dr. Leitenberg's principal research interest is in the regulation of T lymphocyte activation and development. Dr. Leitenberg's work is primarily focused on the basic mechanisms by which alterations in biochemical signaling pathways influence T lymphocyte development and function. These studies are relevant to the development of novel therapeutic approaches to control lymphocyte activation in patients with leukemia and lymphoma, and also to better regulate immune system function in patients with infectious and autoimmune disease. Dr. Leitenberg's work has been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, and the Arthritis Foundation.
