Research Interests
Stephan Ladisch, MD, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he also took his medical degree. He completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Boston followed by a fellowship in pediatric oncology at the National Cancer Institute. He became a faculty member at UCLA in 1978. In 1991, Dr. Ladisch was recruited to Children’s to become the director of the Center for Cancer and Transplantation Biology at the CRI. He was scientific director of CRI from 1998-2005, and is now vice chairman for External Affairs, Department of Pediatrics. He holds the Bosworth Chair in Cancer Biology and is professor of Pediatrics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology at GWU. Dr. Ladisch has an international reputation in pediatric oncology and is the author of over 140 peer-reviewed articles in the areas of cancer biology and immunology, pediatric oncology, and histiocytosis. He is a member of numerous academic and pediatric societies including the American Pediatric Society and the Society for Pediatric Research. He has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1980 and is currently PI on three NCI RO1s: “Immunosuppressive neuroblastoma tumor gangliosides,” “Glycobiology of human medulloblastoma,” and “Complex ganglioside function in neuroblastoma.” Dr. Ladisch has been a charter member of the NCI Pathology B Review Panel and other standing and special emphasis panels of the NIH. His laboratory studies the cell biology and tumor host interactions, including those in pediatric neuroectodermal tumors, including medulloblastoma and neuroblastoma. Major research contributions of his laboratory include (1) discovery of tumor cell shedding of biologically active ganglioside molecules, (2) identification and molecular characterization of novel tumor gangliosides, (3) discovery of immunosuppressive properties of these molecules and resulting suppression of anti tumor immune responses in vivo, (4) delineation of new mechanisms of cancer cell modulation of cell signaling, and their effects on tumor progression, (5) development of murine genetic models of ganglioside depletion, and (6) development of novel strategies for the treatment of neuroectodermal tumors, based upon the above findings. His role as supervisor for graduate students and physician scientists is exemplified by his having trained over 20 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, most of whom have gone on to academic positions. He has also played a major role in developing a multidisciplinary graduate student training program at GWU as director of the Institute for Biomedical Sciences.
