Research Interests
Lawrence D’Angelo, MD, MPH, is the chief of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center and professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, Epidemiology, and Prevention and Community Health at the George Washington University. A graduate of Harvard College, Duke University School of Medicine, and the Harvard University, School of Public Health, Dr. D’Angelo is an internist by training and is one of the few internists in the country board certified in adolescent medicine. Dr. D’Angelo’s long research career at Children’s National has focused on a range of chronic and acute health problems in adolescents. It is his work in HIV infection and AIDS in adolescents that has gained him national and international recognition. Dr. D’Angelo was one of the first clinicians/epidemiologists to call attention to the problem of HIV infection in teens and established the first targeted research program for adolescents in the Division of AIDS at NIH. His work has focused on the natural history of infection in adolescents, risk behaviors in HIV-infected teens, the role of disclosure in the health of these teens, and the most efficacious means of preventing primary and secondary spread of the infection. For this work, he has received a special NIH award and has been continually grant funded since 1986.
