Research Interests
Anamaris M. Colberg-Poley, PhD, an established herpesvirologist, is a professor of Pediatrics and of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Colberg-Poley joined CRI in 1992. She came to CRI from the Du Pont Merck Company in Wilmington, DE, where she was a senior investigator in Virology. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology summa cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and her doctoral degree in Microbiology at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey in 1980. She then trained as a post-doctoral fellow in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with Drs. Lynn Enquist and Barrie Carter. Dr. Colberg-Poley further trained as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in the Zentrum für Molekulare Biologie at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Throughout her career, Dr. Colberg-Poley has studied the regulation of cellular and viral gene expression. During her fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Gruss at the University of Heidelberg, she identified and examined expression of mouse homeo box genes during development. Following her return to the United States, she established her own group to study the gene regulation of a medically important pathogen, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) during its growth. Dr. Colberg-Poley’s group is currently studying the sequential trafficking of HCMV UL37 anti-apoptotic proteins from the secretory apparatus through mitochondria-associated membranes and into mitochondria. These HCMV proteins provide valuable tools to provide insight into this poorly characterized ER to mitochondrial protein trafficking pathway. She has published more than 54 papers and 110 abstracts. She has served as a permanent member of the NIH Virology A Study Section and is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Virology and of The Open Virology Journal.
